The difference is clear ...

The #TFWOC Project has really got me thinking about how underrepresented ‘WOC’ are in the beauty industry. Don’t get me wrong, things have improved massively over the last few years and it’s rare to find a high-end brand that doesn’t stock a huge range of tones in their foundations and powders (apart from Benefit, you guys can stick your bloody Hello Flawless! *sulks*).

Although it’s still not enough.

I went to a Collection 2000 event recently, and was shown the new foundations that they’re bringing out – none of which cater for dark skin. Rimmel, Bourjois, and L’Oreal (amongst many others!) also do not cater for WOC and I think it’s just a little ridiculous.

But I decided to do a little experiment, ‘Mohammed and the mountain’ style.

Yes, that’s me. White. Haiii Hello Flawless.

I used Murad BlemishTreatment Concealer* in Medium, and Vichy Dermablend Ultra Corrective Cream Stick. Both of these products are available in 'dark' shades, albeit somewhat limited ranges. Nonetheless, Murad and Vichy, give yourselves a pat on the back.

Unless things start improving, this may become my daily look – and trust me, it’s 10x scarier in real life. My mum pretty collapsed when she saw ‘me’.
Beware; I may just be lurking under your bed …

Oh wow! So glad that you did this! It definitely outlines how ridiculous some brands shade ranges are!

This post made me laugh...but in a shocked, 'this is ridiculous' kind of way. I doubt I have it anywhere near as bad as you, but on the opposite end of the spectrum, I find it really hard to get pale enough shades sometimes! Make up companies really must expect us to be the same mid shade! x

Ah I'm so sad to hear that, I didn't realise they conveniently omitted the other end of the scale too! I think these companies would be happy if we were all one colour!x

I love this post!!! When I saw the first photo I thought I was going to read that this was a guest post by someone!! I totally agree there still needs a lot to be done for WOC and getting the foundation correct. I have only this year found a foundation that truly matches my skin xx

Great post! Its such a shame that although technology is moving forward companies are still not catering to ethic consumers. Women either have to resort to buying abroad or spend lots of money on high end brands. I have also noticed there is no recognition that darker skins have a variety of undertone aswell. Options tend to either be too red or ashy. Sort it out!!! Side note your Halloween is sorted x

I really admire you for doing this! :D As a dark girl myself I find it increasingly difficult and frustrasting when I see a foundation/concealer that I like that doesn't cater for my colour. You've put me in such a good mood doing this, I definitely agree with you that something needs to be done about this situation - well done!! (perfect Halloween zombie look i think!) xx

Right, having met you at the iFabbo event I can appreciate how pale this has actually made you and I'm actually pissing myself laughing.

I have wondered this a few times, when I came across a 'coloured' foundation in a 99p bin in Boots last year, and went and wondered around to look why it had been reduced.

It's crap that in this day and age, and in a place like Birmingham (for me) where it's about 20% pale-whities who don't see enough of the Midland sunshine like me, and 80% ethnic minorities that they don't cater for them?

I think Maybelline have bought out 'fit me' ones but I am not sure how dark they go. I'd say take it as a compliment, that they seem to think you're flawless enough not to need any!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Great post. Its really hard finding a foundation for dark skin in the £20 region & to be honest I gave up looking years ago. Its time for the industry to realize WOC have money for everyone! Fellow FBL'r so if you have a chance swing by & checked me out :)

LMAO This is hilarious lol

But in all seriousness, I face exactly the same problem - it's highly frustrating and you'd think 2012/3, brands would have got it right by now . . but nope, still climbing the ladder . . slowly! lol

Great post Lola
